The ReadyNAS and Teraserve systems are quite different. Both are essentially servers with lots of disks (4 in a ReadyNAS, 10 in a Teraserve), but while the TeraServe is just a normal dedicated server that can have any operating system, the ReadyNAS is a heavily optimised system purely for the purpose of acting as a network accessible storage appliance. Therefore it has its own custom easy-to-use Web interface and is pre-configured for access via Samba, FTP and other protocols. Because of the optimised nature of the ReadyNAS it uses less power and is therefore cheaper.
If you need a more flexible solution, such as a big filestore backend to attach to a number of content servers in a small cluster, or you wish to be able to run normal server applications such as Apache Web server, or stream directly from the storage server, then we would suggest a TeraServe unit.
All our storage solutions use a Redundant Array of Independent Disks (RAID5) so that if any one disk fails in the system it can continue to run without any data loss. In that event we would then also be alerted and replace the faulty disk as soon as practical.
For literally bomb-proof storage we can also mirror your storage server across to another of an identical specification at our secondary data centre (we have one site in Reading and one in Fareham), which reduces the chance of data loss through unforeseen failures to almost zero.
Our data centre sites are equipped with all the latest physical security measures, sufficient to satisfy many government bodies and financial institutions. On top of that we include our Packet Patrol™ managed router-level firewall with all storage servers at no extra charge.
Only our carefully vetted personnel would have access to your servers and even then we would never investigate the data on them unless you asked us to. Your data is your property.
If you have additional security requirements then we would be happy to discuss them, for example we have in-house experts in real-time data encryption who are available at our normal consultancy rates.
One of the problems with online file storage is often how to get the data up there in the first place, since the norm is to have a large data repository that has only incremental changes over time. We have two solutions to help you with this problem:
1) We give you a free upload allocation equivalent to the size of the server's total storage so that you can fill your whole server at a full 20Mbps without incurring any bandwidth charges.
2) You can send us DVDs or removable hard drives holding your data and we will copy it onto the servers for you during the setup phase.
We operate a normal RAID(5) arrangement whereby one disk is unavailable for data storage since it is being used for the redundancy. Any one disk in a RAID(5) array can fail and the system will continue to operate.
In the case of the TeraServe storage servers, we actually only make 8 of the 10 disks available for data storage. This is so that in the event of a single disk failing we can instantly swap to a space actually in the chassis already. The rationale is that when one disk fails in a batch it is likely that another may do soon as well so it is best to swap the faulty disk ASAP.
